PIPESTONE, MN (December 23, 2020) – The Minnesota River Area Agency on Aging, Inc. (MNRAAA) has awarded Pipestone County Home Health a $25,000 CARES grant. The CARES grant is designed to allow community-based organizations to provide support services, such as chore services, homemaker, visiting, telephone reassurance, and caregiver support services. These funds are designated to address the service needs of older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The CARES grant is made possible through the Federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES Act funding through the Administration for Community Living and the Minnesota Board on Aging). MNRAAA focuses these dollars on rural areas and our population with the greatest social need and those facing social isolation.

"We are seeing additional challenges to the older adult population due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. We have also seen new opportunities to assist our communities during these unprecedented times. This grant allows organizations to assist the older adults through unique ways", said Jason W. Swanson, MNRAAA, Executive Director.

About Pipestone County Home Health

Pipestone County Home Care will provide telephone reassurance to their 60+ and older patients for any health complications they may experience during their COVID illness.  The service allows patients to better care for themselves by providing confidence that a nurse is available to call if they have questions or if their situation worsens. Patients of Pipestone, Murray, Rock, and Lincoln counties, under the direction of a physician/health care provider, have been provided this service since the pandemic began to ramp up in May of 2020.

After a patient tests positive, a referral from their physician is made to Pipestone Home Care, and an RN initiates the services. These services include equipment to monitor temperature and oxygen levels and daily phone calls to educate, encourage, and connect patients with other resources to benefit them throughout their COVID-19 illness. Patients that have already received this service over the past six months have been grateful for the support through the phone calls. This service can not be billed to insurances and is provided at no cost to patients. Pipestone County Home Care staff feel it is a very challenging time for all, especially the elderly, and providing this service is something we feel compassionate about.
