Navigating Menopause: Support and Care at Pipestone County Medical Center

Published October 1, 2024

October is Menopause Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of understanding and managing this natural life transition. Menopause typically occurs between ages 45 and 55, marking the end of menstrual cycles. However, the symptoms and changes associated with menopause can begin years earlier, affecting a woman’s physical and emotional well-being.

Common menopause symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and sleep disturbances. If these symptoms significantly impact a woman’s daily life, it is helpful to seek professional support. “Menopause is a natural yet significant transition, and it’s essential for women to know they don’t have to go through it alone,” says Dr. Steven Verbeek, OB/GYN at Pipestone County Medical Center (PCMC). “We offer a variety of treatments and management strategies tailored to each woman’s needs.  Our goal is to provide personalized care that helps women confidently navigate this stage of life.”

Dr. Jackie Vroman, a Family Medicine Physician at PCMC, acknowledges that many women have concerns about when or if they should schedule an appointment during menopause. “Menopause is a normal and natural part of a woman’s life, but it often brings fears and uncertainties.  In the years leading up to and through menopause, many changes occur, and some can disrupt day-to-day activities. Fortunately, many safe and effective treatments are available to address these concerns,” she explains.  “As a provider, I always aim to promote health and wellness. The treatment plan and options available for women will vary based on several factors, so a one-on-one visit to review them is an important step in providing care.”

Non-hormonal treatments, including dietary changes, regular exercise, and stress management techniques, can also play a significant role in managing symptoms.

Non-hormonal treatments, including dietary changes, regular exercise, and stress management techniques, can also play a significant role in managing symptoms.  Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can alleviate symptoms like hot flashes, but not every woman is a candidate for HRT. Besides HRT, there are also other medications available that can help treat a variety of symptoms.  Managing menopause involves a comprehensive approach.

Dr. Megan Wilkinson, also a Family Medicine Physician at PCMC, emphasizes the importance of personalized care. “Menopause is more than just a physical transition; it can also affect emotional well-being.  We encourage women to talk openly about their symptoms and any concerns they may have.  Our team is here to listen and to help women find the best path forward.”

At PCMC, our healthcare providers are committed to supporting women through menopause with compassion and expertise. Whether through personalized treatment plans, ongoing education, or simply being a source of support, we are here to ensure that every woman feels empowered during this time of change.
