Why Planning for Long-Term Care Before the Need Arises Is Wise

October is Long-Term Care Planning Month, a reminder that preparing for the future isn’t about expecting the worst—it’s about creating peace of mind. For many families, the idea of long-term care can feel uncomfortable or even overwhelming, which is why starting the conversation early is so valuable.

Studies show that nearly 70 percent of Americans over age 65 will need some form of long-term care in their lifetime. Despite this, only a small percentage of people take the time to make a plan before the need arises.

“Starting the conversation now allows families to think clearly and make decisions together,” says Sherri Post, Agency Manager at Avera@Home Pipestone. “It’s not about assuming the worst—it’s about making sure your wishes are honored and your loved ones are supported.”

Planning ahead also allows individuals to explore all available options, whether that’s remaining at home with support, choosing community-based services, or considering hospice care when appropriate. “When families plan together, they’re able to focus more on quality time and less on stressful, last-minute decisions,” Post explains.

Long-term care planning isn’t just about paperwork—it’s about ensuring that future needs are met with dignity, comfort, and love. By starting early, families can create a roadmap that reflects their values and provides reassurance that they will be cared for in a way that feels right to them.

“Having a plan in place offers a sense of relief,” Post shares. “It allows families to spend more time together, enjoying the present, and knowing the future is already prepared for.”
