Preparing Children for a Healthy School Year

Published August 4, 2026

As summer winds down and families prepare for a new school year, now is the perfect time to focus on children’s health. Taking a few simple steps before classes begin can help students stay healthy, active, and ready to learn.

According to Sueky Moeller, DNP, annual wellness visits are among the most important ways parents can support their children’s health.

“Back-to-school season is a great reminder to schedule annual checkups,” said Moeller. “These visits allow us to monitor growth and development, address concerns, review medications, and ensure children are up to date on recommended immunizations.”

Immunizations help protect children from preventable illnesses and promote healthier schools and communities. Parents should review their child’s vaccination records and consult their healthcare provider if they have questions about recommended vaccines.

Maricia Pronk, PA-C, encourages families to focus on healthy routines as children transition back to school.

“Good habits established before school starts can make a big difference throughout the year,” said Pronk. “Prioritizing adequate sleep, nutritious meals, physical activity, and limited screen time can help children perform at their best academically and socially.”

Parents can also help children prepare emotionally for the return to school by discussing expectations, establishing routines, and fostering open communication about any concerns.

A healthy school year starts long before the first day of class. By scheduling preventive care appointments, reviewing immunizations, and reinforcing healthy habits at home, families can help set their children up for success throughout the year.
